Error - 'Unable to launch Microsoft Outlook! Further Information: Cannot create ActiveX component'

Updated this week

Latest builds of Microsoft Office for Office 365 do not allow add ins to work, however this can be resolved by applying a patch to the registry. For further details of the patch please raise a new case online and reference the title of this article.

This error can be caused in a hosted environment when Hosted Dimensions Client is trying to send an ADM document using the local copy of Outlook. This functionality relies on the ADM application sending a request to Microsoft Outlook to compile an email ready to send. The Hosted environment cannot communicate with a local copy of Outlook due to Remote Desktop restrictions. This feature is therefore not available for Hosted clients.

The workaround to address this issue is:

  1. In Dimensions, open the required document.

  2. In the Document Management window, click Print.

  3. If not already selected, use the Name drop-down and select a relevant PDF printer. If a PDF printer is not available, there are several free options available online.

  4. In the Save As window, select the location to save the document to.

  5. Use your local email client, attach the document, and send to the desired Customer or Supplier.
